Architecture Discipline, a Delhi-based design firm, has designed and built several Mohalla Clinics in the city that promise both impact and sustainability. These clinics are made from upcycled shipping containers and are designed to serve people in smaller neighbourhoods.

The Mohalla Clinics, which translate to "neighbourhood clinics" in Hindi, are part of a larger healthcare initiative by the Delhi government to provide accessible healthcare services to all citizens, particularly those from low-income backgrounds. The clinics are designed to serve lakhs of people in the city who would otherwise have to travel long distances to access healthcare.

Architecture Discipline was tasked with designing the Mohalla Clinics, which had to be affordable, sustainable, and easy to replicate in other locations. The firm's solution was to use shipping containers, which are easily available and can be repurposed into functional spaces.

The containers were modified and fitted with windows, doors, and insulation to create functional and comfortable spaces for patients and healthcare providers. The clinics were equipped with basic healthcare amenities such as examination tables, medical equipment, and storage cabinets. The interiors were designed to be bright and welcoming to make patients feel at ease.

One of the benefits of using shipping containers is that they are easily transportable, which makes them ideal for setting up healthcare facilities in remote or hard-to-reach areas. The containers can be loaded onto trucks and transported to the desired location, where they can be quickly assembled and made operational.

Additionally, the containers are made from steel, which is a highly recyclable material. Upcycling the containers into functional spaces also reduces waste and carbon emissions associated with building new structures from scratch.

This is an innovative and sustainable solution to providing accessible healthcare services to people in smaller neighbourhoods.
