In the serene village of Emmad in Kerala’s Thrissur district lies Geetham, a family home that is a stunning example of sustainability. The owner of the home is Ragesh T, a teacher by profession, who wanted an eco-friendly home with a dedicated space for reading and listening to music.
“Our idea was simple —,” he says, “giving zero importance to luxury and artificiality. Located in a calm area, we wanted to preserve the ambience of our plot and bring in as much natural air and light into the home as possible.”
For this he collaborated with Shantilal, an architect who specialises in sustainable architecture. Shantilal designed a single-story house with the facilities of a double-story one.
Geetham’s walls were built with red stone and plastered with an eco-friendly mix of mud, jaggery, lime, and myrobalan. Old roof tiles were used above a waterproofed bamboo sheet to avoid leakage issues. Doors, windows, and furniture were made with recycled wood, and the roof was built at an above-normal height to lower the temperature inside and attract natural light.
The 1,200-square-foot house has a courtyard, living room, dining area, work area, two bedrooms with attached bathrooms, and a multi-utility space and open terrace on the first floor.
“It went slightly beyond the budget because of the rise in the price of construction materials during the pandemic-induced lockdown period. But, we completed the construction this year and the family is satisfied with how their dream home has turned out.”
