The Indian Railways has seen massive progress in many departments under the leadership of senior divisional environment and housekeeping manager Fedrick Pariath.

During his time in Mumbai, Pariath convinced blue-chip firms to install plastic bottle-crushing machines at stations. When he moved to the Ahmedabad division, he focused on waste segregation and installing compost machines and two solid waste management plants in major stations, based on the zero-waste concept.

To reduce water wastage from washing coaches and platforms, Pariath installed phytoremediation model sewage treatment plants at different locations across the Ahmedabad division, which generate around 860 kilo litres per day recycled water for gardening and coach washing.

Pariath also collaborated with EcoHike, which makes apparels out of PET bottles, and Bisleri, which provided a sitting bench made of recycled plastics for every 50 kg of multi-layered plastic (MLP) provided by the railways. Recycled PET bottles and benches made by Bisleri are on display at the Ahmedabad and Gandhidham stations in Gujarat.
