Vinisha Umashankar, 16, was inspired to come up with an alternative to burnt coal wastage when she saw many iron vendors in her town of Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, throwing it out at the end of the day. She pondered about the fumes emanating from charcoal and the brutal impact these gases, such as CO2, have on our environment.
The genius then came up with a unique solar-powered iron cart – Iron-Max, which uses the power of the sun to heat up a steam iron. With the help of engineers at the National Innovation Foundation, she built the first working prototype and applied for a patent.
The blue-painted cart, which can be towed around like a cycle, drew instant applause. It allowed vendors to go through societies and collect clothes that had to be ironed.
The Iron-Max gets charged with just five to six hours of bright sunshine and has a battery option for cloudy days. Intriguingly, it also has a coin-operated phone and a charging station where people can charge their mobile phones.
