A group of architecture students from JSAA (Jindal School of Art and Architecture) have built an eco-friendly school in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The school, named ‘Shiksha Gram’, is designed to be sustainable and energy-efficient.

The students, under the guidance of their professors, started the project in 2019. They used natural and locally available materials like clay, stone, and bamboo, to construct the school. The buildings are designed to utilise natural light and ventilation to reduce energy consumption. The roofs have been made with eco-friendly tiles, which can help reduce the heat inside the building.

The school also has an organic farm that provides fresh and healthy food for the students and holds lessons on agriculture and the importance of sustainability. The students have also designed a waste management system that recycles waste into compost and biogas.

The classrooms have been designed to be interactive and engaging for students. The walls are painted with bright colours and have paintings and murals depicting Indian culture and history. The furniture is made of bamboo and is designed to be ergonomic and comfortable, and the school is also equipped with technology like solar panels and rainwater harvesting systems, reducing reliance on the grid and groundwater.

With Shiksha Gram, the students hope that others will be inspired to build eco-friendly and sustainable schools in India. They believe that sustainability should be an integral part of education and that schools should teach students about the importance of sustainable living.

#WingifyEarth encourages such proactive actions to safeguard the environment and keep it clean.
